As of 2019, the Royal Hachijo Oriental Resort is overgrown, abandoned, neglected, overgrown and forgotten. Now it is the largest haikyo (ruin) of Hachijo-jima. For a time it was the largest hotel in all of Japan. The resort closed in 2006 but had been going down hill since the 1990’s tourism abroad had become easier to Guam, Hawaii and Thailand. The fountains depict plaster Greek statues. The beautiful sea only yards away and the unbelievable volcanic mountain view seen from anywhere on the grounds. It was stylized in French baroque and made as a luxury beach resort. This surreal and colossal place was built in 1963 as after World War II the popularity of the island grew as a tropical paradise. Residing on an island with less than 8,000 inhabitants it is a tourist location of the Izu archipelago. Hidden safe on a volcanic island in the Philippine Sea, the area has been dubbed the Hawaii of Japan. Nature thrives and blooms with flowers and palm trees enveloping this delightful little paradise. Old and rusted small fences are set in places barely blocking out the world. The tropical climate allows nature to thrive in its reclamation.Ī few potted plants block a small road to the back entrance of the hotel. Starring at the coast, the Royal Hotel of Hachijo Oriental Resort lays along the 866 in Mitsune, of the island Hachijo-jima, ward of the prefecture Tokyo, Japan.
